The Dragon
On that day, that most fateful of days,
The sky shined radiant blue, speckled with clouds,
Everyone went on their separate ways,
Chatter and laughter hummed through the crowds.
At first it was naught but a small tremor,
Echoed endlessly through the crowded city,
Then the earth shifted, a pale green glimmer,
Emerged from the mountainside, it looked so pretty.
The light reflecting off a thousand scales,
A beauty to behold, as it reared its head,
Then it flashed its dirty teeth, its pointed nails,
Its mouth opened, suddenly the air flashed red.
And it was off, soaring through the cobalt sky,
Boulders cascading down its massive hide,
Piercing the awed silence of the markets: a cry,
As fire engulfed the valley far and wide.
The flames reached so high they licked the heavens,
As the beast flew on, forever forwards driven.
