Where the Heart Is

I read the novel Where The Heart Is, by Billie Letts, in my sophomore English class. One day over the weekend I started reading the chapters we had for homework and ended up finishing the book. It made me think about a lot about the idea of home and family. I read lots of books, but not many make me think about things, so I enjoyed that about this novel.

The story begins with 17 year old Novalee Nation, who is 7 months pregnant, being abandoned in a Wal-Mart in Oklahoma on her way to California with her boyfriend, Willy Jack. After living in the Wal-Mart for 2 months, Novalee begins to make herself a home with her new friends in the small town of Sequoyah.

Where The Heart Is isn't for everyone. While some people love this novel, others have a hard time interpreting the symbolism in the book and dislike it because of that. I believe it is a good book and people who don't mind trying to understand it should give it a chance.
