The Cliff

I hung over the cliff face, reaching for my friend’s hand. The rocks crumbled. He reached for my hand, but missed. The rocks gave way and I saw him fall backwards off the cliff face. The shock etched in his eyes was imprinted in my mind. Thank God it was only the school’s rock wall.

Memories at the Lighthouse

I sat on the hill overlooking the lighthouse. This was his favorite spot… It’s hard to believe it’s only been two years. Now he rested beneath me.
“Thanks to you, we have this view. You picked a nice spot.”
“I know.”
“Shall we go inside?”
“Like old times.”
His spirit followed me in.

Wounded

“Stay with me. We’re gonna fix you up!”
“You’ve done all you can. Complete the mission.”
The surrounding battle was a blur. Only one thing mattered.
“Hang on, you’re gonna be fine.”
Bullets flew past.
“We don’t leave a man behind. You need to get up. Let’s move!”
In the end, selflessness was his downfall.
