August 2022 Fiction Contest: Day at the Beach
Jason tells me he loves the beach.
We splash through the waves. Then the bullets start ripping apart guys left and right. The water bled, dark red and thick… I remember…
I remember Jason fell, just fell over, like he fainted or something. I look over and he’s gone and I’m screaming while the whole sky is thunder and fireworks and now all I can think is getting up that beach, just slipping on the sand and climbing over all these bodies.
I glimpse the hazy ridge, beyond reachable. What a day at the beach. I just wish it was happy.
This is about D-Day.
