Gold Star in the Window
Shells scream, bullets whistle. “We’ll make it home, Jack.” The oath courses through my veins. Flash! Jack’s foxhole is enveloped in destruction. “We’ll make it home, Jack.” The carnage complete, his photograph of us is all that’s left. “We’ll make it home, Jack.” As his gold-star brother, I receive his folded American flag.
