Premonitions

I look around the empty room and feel my throat getting tighter with every breath. I check my phone but nothing is working. I can’t open my door because it’s bolted shut and the windows are boarded up with no sign of the outside world still being there. I am completely alone. Well, not completely, she’s here. She is there staring at me, taunting. I can’t shut out what she’s saying. Each word she says gets louder and louder.

“You did this, you made them all leave and now we’re alone. We have nothing and no one, and there’s only yourself to blame!”

Was she right? I was alone, I had done it to myself. They all left and were never coming back, did I really expect them to stay? No, they’ll come back, right? They said they wouldn’t leave, they said they cared about me, so where are they?

“You’re mean and selfish and you talk too much, no one else can ever get in a word. You’re pathetic! I mean, how often do you beg for people to stay? God, it’s embarrassing!”

No, no, it’s not! I just can’t help but ruin things, but I can apologize and it’ll all be better, they’ll come back. They have to come back.

“Stop fidgeting! You never stop fidgeting, you look crazy! Look at your nails, you’ve bitten them down to stubs! Do you think that looks good? No one wants someone crazy and you’re the damn definition of it. Blame it on your mom or your dad or sister or brother or friend or boyfriend, but at the end of the day, there’s one constant variable, everyone leaves you.” She was right. It was me. All I had was her. The only one who would never leave no matter how much I want her to, but that was the problem, we’re the perfect match.

“no matter what you may do or who leaves next, I will always be here for you. I’ll be here as a reminder of what you lost, of what you pushed away. They tried because they felt bad but they could only hang on for so long. Don’t worry though I’ve got a great grip, I won’t leave.” Each word echoed through my ears but her mouth never opened.

All I saw was a tear roll down her cheek, followed by a stream of many more. I looked around the room once more, accepting my life of solitude with only her and her honest words. Just empty walls, a bolted door, boarded windows, and a girl sitting in the mirror staring back at me.
