Dance to dance
We are preparing for a dance competition this weekend. “Our crew needs to win this $10,000”, Jake, our leader said. I thought, it was never about about the money for me. I just wanted to have fun with the crew, who was my second family, although I can see why Jake only cared about winning. The leader of the rival team and Jake, had a long history. They used to be best friends until they argued about who was the better dancer and became rivals. “Let’s go guys, no pain no gain. We will keep practicing all day and all night if we have to”, Jake yelled. “I think we should just go out and have fun, clear our minds and then practice”, I suggested. The rest of the crew agreed with me. “Fine you guys can go out or whatever, but when we lose, you guys will be sorry that you did”, Jake said, seeming very frustrated at us. “Why don’t you come along”, I said without thinking. “Yeah, yeah come with us Jake”, the crew agreed. “I’m coming just to make sure none of you guys mess up or do anything stupid, we can’t afford to lose a dancer”, said Jake. We went out, and had a great time. There was a carnival and everyone had fun, including Jake. On our way back, we saw our rival team arguing and physically fighting. “It was never really about winning for any of us. I just wanted to have fun with my friends and live in the moment. Who knows what is going to happen tomorrow, but tonight, let’s just have fun, who cares about who wins. The team that stays together and has the most fun is the team that really wins”, I said. I decided to just say what I felt, hoping that Jake would understand the real reason of why we started this competition. We started as one team, but split into two, but that doesn’t change the reason of why we want to dance. I guess what I said really went to Jake because the next thing I knew, we were on stage, not worrying about how our positions are, or who is not coordinated, we were just having fun with our routine, and everyone did well. If the dancers have fun, the audience has fun, and they vote for us. We ended up winning, which was not surprising since the rival team ended up fighting with each other on stage and although, Jake and Moose, the leader of the other team, did not become best friends again, Jake realized his main goal of dancing.
