Goodbye

I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. She was texting me non stop and so I muted my phone and decided to take a nap. She'd last without me.

I groaned and sat up, I felt so much better thanks to that nap. I checked my phone, it alerted me that I had 53 text messages, all from her. She'd never texted me that much before, she probably had a pop quiz or something and was asking for the answers. I chuckled and flipped to the first one.
:The teacher is such a d*****
I rolled my eyes, how did I know?
:Someone just said that the university’s gonna be on lockdown,
:I wonder what 4?

I thought for a second and turned on the TV, and then continued reading.
:Some1 said that 1 of the kids brought a gun!
My heart stopped for a second. All noise was blocked out for a second.
:We’re underneath the desks
:Im scared
:Why aren’t u responding?
:Plz ru mad at me??
:Im so scared
:Just send me something plz
:Plz??
:Did i do something?
:I hear footsteps
:Plz respond!!
:I heard a gunshot
:Another one
:PLZRESPOND
:PLZ
:A boy and a girl r crying 2gether
:I can here screaming outside
:I wonder wat ur doing now
:Ru laughing @ me?
:Ru happy that Im gone?

I shook my head and the tears started to fall onto the tiny device. I could barely hear the TV over my heartbeat.
“There has been a shooting at a nearby university, the killer has killed. . .” I sunk onto my knees, and continued reading.
:Ru happy that u wont have 2 deal w me anymore?
:Some1 is trying 2 break open the door
:I want u 2 know something
:I luv u
:I guess this is it
:I luv u
:O! Hes leaving
I immediately sighed in relief and slumped back into my chair. She was safe, that was all that mattered.
:WERE GONNA LIVE
:IM SO HAPPY
:The couple is still crying tho
:I want 2 help
:I heard something
:Hey ru alive over there
I smiled weakly at her question, and looked back up at the TV. The anchor was reporting the number of casualties.
:I heard the sound of glass
:U don’t think that people would jump would u?
:Were 6 stories up
:I hope that they rn’t
:His footsteps stopped
:Hes coming back
I sat up immediately, and I heard the anchor list the names of the victims.
:Hes walking thru the door
:OMG i know him
:Hes the kid from thtr
:The 1 that made the creep play
:Hes looking at some1
:He shot someone
:They’re bleeding on the floor
:He’s shooting again
:I’ve lost count now
:Hes coming this way
:Goodbye.
Even though I read all of her messages, I can still hear the anchor on TV. He finished reading the list of names. Hers was on there. It echoed in my head. My tears fell from my eyes.
“AAAAAAAGGHH!!” I cried out, and pounded my fist into the couch. I couldn’t control it. I ran out the door and into the street.
“WHY!?” I shouted to the world, I looked towards the direction of the university. I couldn’t stop my legs from running. My bare feet slamming against the pavement made it painful, but it couldn’t compare to the pain that my heart is feeling. I ran to the university, it was only a few blocks away. We live right on the outside of the campus. I arrived at the entrance to find police cars, ambulances, and firetrucks. I fell to my knees, and sobbed. A police officer helped me up, and he let me sit with some other weeping kids. I stood up after a while, and walked towards the main hall. To where her class was. That’s when I saw it. Her. She was being covered by a black, plastic bag. I could see her face. It was pale, her eyes were open. They were red and puffy, and I could still see the fear in her face. The medic wrapped over her face, and then hoisted her into the ambulance. I collapsed there, my hands clutching my head. Someone came up to me, it was a kid from her class. He looked at me sadly and told me this:
“He pressed the ‘send button’ on her last text. I saw it. B-Before he . . . Killed her.” He whispered the last bit, and then walked away.

The one thing I am relieved about from that day, would be the fact that I knew what she was thinking the entire time. I knew that she loved me. No, I know that she loves me. But she didn’t know that I loved her back. I couldn’t respond. I’d lost her, and I didn’t even get to say goodbye.
