Choosing Friends
The school bell rang and everybody rushed out of the classroom. I walked over to my sister's classroom where my mom always picked us up. My mom was talking to my friend, Ally's, mom when I got over there.
Ally had been my best friend since kindergarden, even though that was the only year we were in the same class. We always sat together at lunch, played together at recess, and we hung out after school all the time.
After my mom finished chatting away with Ally's mom, we walked to the car. "How was your day?" my mom asked. My sister, Alexa, would always say, "bad" and reveal nothing about her day. I had a good day so far. We got to play capture the flag at the end of the day and I didn't have any homework.
"I was talking to Ally's mom, and they accepted the job offer in southern California."my mom said.
"Really? So they're going to move away?"
"At the end of the school year."
Ally had told me they might move away at school a week ago, but I had hoped her dad wouldn't accept the job offer. I had other friends, but I was too shy to go over and ask if I could sit with them. I didn't know what to talk about after that, so I was quiet for the rest of the drive home. I really didn't want Ally to move away, but there was nothing I could do about it.
I finished up my math homework. I didn't have that much homework that day, so I had plenty of time to do what I wanted. I turned on my phone, which I had recently gotten, and texted Ally.
I texted her sometimes since she had moved away, but I wasn't good about keeping in touch. She came to visit a few times, but those were the only times we had to catch up on things. My mom had told me they might move back, so I had been texting her a lot for a couple of days.
She texted back quickly this time,"Hi. I'm moving back!:)"
"Yay! When r u coming?"
"This summer. I have to finish my homework now. Bye."
I couldn't believe she was actually moving back! It would be so fun to be in the same school again.I started worrying though. What if she didn't like my friends? They all went to different elementary schools, and I only knew them because they were in my class this year. I forced myself to stop worrying about that. I was so excited to see Ally again! We used to have so much fun together, and we always did when she came to visit. I couldn't wait to see her in a month!
I walked out of the classroom with Ally on my second week of seventh grade. It was so hot that day, so I could feel the sweat running down my face. We walked to our next classroom to drop off our bags.
"History was so boring today. I can't learn about the Byzantines anymore!" Ally complained.
"You think everything is boring, but yeah. This time, it was kind of boring. Ally thinks every subject except her elective and PE is boring, but some days are exceptions. Today we learned about the Thoedosian walls, which were some number of miles long and somme number of feet thick. It was a good thing we took notes, or I would fail the test.
"Is it ok if I sit with some of my friends from other classes at lunch today?" Ally said. She didn't look at me when she said it,and I didn't know how to respond. She didn't have a problem hanging out with me, so it had to be my friends.I did notice that she hadn't been as talkative during lunch, but I didn't think she would ditch us.
"Yeah, that's ok. We can still hang out at brunch, right?" It's not like what I say will change what she will do.
"Yeah." At least we still hang out a lot. We had done a lot of things together since she moved back.
I was a little upset that Ally wasn't sitting with me anymore. I was so excited that she was going to move back, and then she decides not to hang out with me. I like my friends, but Ally was my best friend from kindergarten.
I walked out of my language arts classroom and headed towards where I sit with my group of friends. I usually wait for Ally there so we can wlak to the pavailion together. My class got out a little early today, so it took a few minutes for her class to get out. Ally was the first one out of tje classroom. "Hi" I said.
"Hi. Do you want to come site with me at lunch today?"
"Sure."
Ally smiled a little. "Great!"
I sat down net to Ally and a bunch of people I didn't know. After a few minutes, I started to play with an extra hardband I had around my writst. I was not very talkative with new people, even though I was with my friends. I heard bits and pieces of the conversation, and started to pay more attention when I heard my name.
"What elective do you have?"
"Band. What elective do you have?" I fel so nervous. I always worried about what other people thought of me a little too much.
"I'm taking woodship right now."
"That's cool. I really wanted to take woodship, but I chose band instead. I saw some thing that piople in my class were taking home, and they look awesome."
We started talking a little more and I relaxed a little. I really liked hanging out with Ally's frinds, but I couldn't help looking over at my group of friends. I worried about what they would say about me hanging out with this groups of people. They probably saw me sit down with Ally. I hoped they wouldn't care too much. I mean, it was only one day. I guess I'd find out tomorrow.
I heard someone running up behind me, and saw that it was Julia, one of my friends. "Why didn't you sit with us today?"
"Ally asked me to sit with her. I thought you wouldn't care. It was only one day."
"So you'll sit with us again tomorrow?"
"Sure." I wasn't sure though. I liked Ally and her friends too. Julia ran ahead of me to catch up wiht some of her other friends. I saw Ally walking behind me, so I waited for her to catch up.
"So are you going to sit with me tomorrow?"
"I don't know. Do I have to chose?"
"Yeah. You can't be in two places at once." She was right, but I didn't want to have to chose who to hang out with.
"I guess I'll decide later. Bye." And I ran to catch up with Julia.
I started walking towards the pavilion, and I sped up towards Ally when I saw her come out of her classroom. I still had no idea who I was going to hang out with.
"Hi." Ally jerked around, obviously not noticing I was behind her.
"So are you going to come hang out with my group of friends?" I really didn't know what to do. I was never very good at making decisions, and this one was much harder than picking an ice cream flavor.
"You know you're eventually going to have to make a decision, right?" I wanted to say "you know it's not that easy, right?", but I decided not to.
"Yeah. Why can't you come sit with me?"
"No offense, but I'd rather sit with my group of friends than yours." I thought, What did she have against my friends?
"You could have your friends come sit with us too. My friends aren't that bad."
"I'll see if my friends want to." and we separated twoards our different groups.
A few minues later, I saw Ally and her friends walking over. This was good, but I needed it to go well. What if my friends didn't like hers?
"Why are then coming to sit with us?" Sophia, one of my other friends, whispered to me.
"I asked them to. They're nice." I whispered back. I waved at Ally, and we scooted back to make room for them. No one was saying anything, and I started twisting my fingers together in weird ways. I was so nervous, and didn't know what to do.
I finally was able to say, "Are you guys all in village K?" At my middle school, we were separated into villages. Everyone in a village had the same teachers for science, history, language arts, and math. Most of my friends were in village K, including me.
"Yeah." said one of Ally's frinds. Her friends were in village K too.
"What did you guys think of the science test today?" I asked.
"It was ok. I'm not sure about a few questions though." Julia answered.
"Really? I thought it was easy." Ally said.
"I'm wiht Ally." I added.
Soon, everybody started talking together normally. I felt like a weight had been lifted off to my shoulders. I wasn't going to need to chose who to hang out with! It was really fun having boht groups together. I guess I worred a little too much about this whole thing. It was so awesome to be able to hang out with all of my friends, and having Ally move back.

My best friend moving away at the end of third grade and moving back this past summer going into seveth grade inspired me to write this story. I hope that people will understand that you can keep all of your friends and you shouldn't worry about little problems.
