Letting go
Prologue-
She always sat there in that chair, in the left corner of the room reading her book.. It matched her personality. Bold, colorful, and beautiful yet lost in a world of confusion. As I pace back and forth I feel a strange breeze near her chair. The breeze travels through my body then into my veins. I begin to fall, fall into a different world. Than I see her, golden hair tied up in a flawless bun. Dressed in ripped blue jeans, a white t shirt, and a flannel tied around her waist, just as remember her that night. She walks toward me with one arm reached out. Then my mind goes fuzzy.
“Son, wake up you have been lying here for hours”
Startled, I jump to my feet. In front of me stands a short old woman. Her eyes dark, filled with years of knowledge. Her weak body has carried her through years of history. I have seen her sitting on her porch, she watches our society change like a book. I have never heard her speak until now. She gestures me to come into her apartment. Her apartment is rather neat for someone of that age. On the center of one wall there is a picture of a man. It must be her lost husband or son but I am too afraid to ask. She points at the chair and I assume she wants me to sit their. Together we sit there in silence for hours until she finally opens her mouth.
“You lost someone didn't you.”
Before I could reply she said ,“I saw her she is here”. Bewildered, I told her that she died the other night and was not coming back. Her last words were she is still here. After that she made her way to her room and shut the door, I think that was my signal to leave. For a while I pondered whether she could be right. Could I trust this old lady? As I begin to leave my phone buzzes in my pocket. The caller ID reads Luna Harley. How could it be, she is long gone. I accept the call and all I hear is dead silence. I try to find the location where the call came from but it had been disabled. Strange. Maybe there something wrong with my phone, I will go to the store tomorrow. Still nothing made sense. She always had her location setting on plus her phone was dead that night. Some stranger probably picked it up… As I slide my phone bracket it to my shorts I feel it. Her ticket, her ring. I could have saved her.
Chapter 1- Flashback
Summer was just beginning and the office was getting hotter and hotter. I released most my employees for vacation. All that was left was Sam, my recruiter and long time friend. We still had to sort through hundreds of intern applications. Offering one student in the country to intern at my company was the worst decision I ever made. Although we are one of the largersoftware company in the country I did not expect this many applicants.
After three sleepless night Sam and I choose Jade Mitchell. She was 17 year old student studying to become a software engineer. She had a GPA of 5.0 and created technology to help people get water. As I began to break hundreds of hearts with rejection emails, Sam finds one more application. It belonged to Luna Harley, age 20. In the application, she explained how she was born into a rich family in Brazil but was raised in Kenya by a caring family. Why she ended up in Kenya is still a mystery to her. She came to America in hopes that she could get a job to bring her Kenyan family to the states. She is studying in a community college on a full scholarship and hopes to become a doctor. Inspired by her story and the experience she has to offer I decided to offer her an internship too. Sam didn't think we have space for two interns which is true. He thought I am crazy to offer Luna Harley an internship. We decided to interview the two women next week on June 9th.
June 9th arrived in a flash. Sam and myself prepare to interview Jade. She entered the office in a designer suit and fancy shoes. She makes a great first impression us. She is smart and will definitely do a good job for us. She is exactly what a recruiter would look for. Luna waits patiently outside my office. Her dress falls right above her knees. Snow white with red jewels, definitely hand sewed. Her arms are scarred possibly from childhood accidents. Although she did impress us, her interview was nowhere near as good as Jade’s interview. Jade has much more experience in software engineering while Luna has almost none. Giving Jade the internship was obviously the right decision but I just can't let go of Luna. There's something about her that I have never seen in anyone else. Sam does not see the same potential in Luna that I do. He thinks I am not paying attention to work potential but instead love. He is right…
This week has been tough after my girlfriend left me saying all I care about is work. She could be right… Maybe I work too much…
……..
I decide that I will reward both of them with an internship.
………….
Next week I will take my some of my workers to a retreat in California. I am going to invite Luna and Jade to see how they work with others. Jade politely rejected the invitation due to a conflict at her University. Luna was so excited to travel to California. In her email she explained to me how she has never left country since her arrival. The flight tickets are costing me a fortune but my workers deserve a break.
