Simply Fate
Letters came everyday after Scottie left, but I never read them. My feelings for him left my heart the day he told me that she was pregnant. His father forced him to leave, and with the words ‘Fate I still love you, and I always will,’ he left.
It was a cold day in December, a year after Scottie left. Enough time had passed for my love for him to change into sheer contempt.
“Fate!” Jon yelled from across the hall. “Scottie is coming back.”
I froze. Those words were the ones I had once wished to hear, but now I knew that I would never be able to face him again.
“What?” I asked, in complete shock.
“Genevieve gave the baby up for adoption, and Scottie convinced Dad to let him come home.”
At that moment, I knew that I had to leave. There was no way I could stay, and go to school with the one guy I had spent the past year trying to forget.
“Thanks for the warning, Jon.”
“What are you going to do?” he asked.
“Leave, I suppose. You know I won’t be able to see him again.”
“You can’t just leave. He’ll just keeping looking for you, Fate.”
“Why would he want to find me?” I asked, hopelessly.
“Because, Fate, I still love you, and nothing can change that.”
“Scottie..” I whispered. Nothing had changed about him. His eyes, the first thing I noticed, were filled with complete sorrow and remorse. All the emotions, which I had repressed for the past year, overtook me, and all I could remember was how much I missed him, how much I needed him.
“I made a mistake, but please let me be with the one girl whom I never stopped thinking about since the day I left home. Everyday I thought of you; the memories of us were the reasons I was able to live. You were the sole reason I was able to make it through all the horrible days of Genevieve’s pregnancy. She even began to realize that I loved you. Fate, she gave the child up for adoption because she wanted me to be with you. Fate, please don’t leave me, I promise never to let you down.”
And with those words, my tears began to fall.
