August 2022 fiction contest: wolves
The forest’s calls echo. They are untamed and blissfully free.
The wolf listens. She is wounded, she is scarred. And yet she is free.
She pads with the quiet grace only a wolf can achieve. Her ears prick, and the scents of the deer drift on the wind. She is alone, but not really, not when the forest is so full of life.
The wolf is cautious. The dogs may chase her, hunt her down. She would be punished for escaping.
A new smell. It is strange. She turns to look, eyes narrowed.
He too is a wolf. Lonely, yet free.
