Eternal Consciousness
The sheer force behind the dagger allowed it to punch straight through my rib cage, penetrating my lungs. The shock had briefly paralyzed my body, I couldn’t even bring myself to resist; all I could do was stare into the eyes of my murderer as he twisted his blade inside my chest. I couldn’t breathe, a taste of metal and blood filled my mouth as I collapsed to the ground. As I fell the dagger slid out of my torso, still in the grip of my killer. Blood gushed from the gaping hole in my chest. I gasped for air but was drowned in my own blood that instantly filled my mouth when I hit the ground. All I could do was stare up at the sky as I waited for death to come.
My eyes were wide open, looking up at the sky as I lay sprawled out in a pool of blood. I could feel my body relax as I bled out. I focused all my energy on my surroundings, everything seemed to be losing color as I lost blood. The sky was changing from a bright blue to a dull grey. I slowly turned my head to the side and watched as the entire forest faded to grey in front of my eyes. The trees and bushes shriveled up and died, the ground lost texture, and the sun's brilliant rays of light receded from existence. It was as if the world was dieing with me. As everything faded away from me my pain did too; I gained my strength back but I felt nothing but a great emptiness inside me. My wound was still there but I was no longer bleeding. It’s like someone had hollowed out my body, I had nothing to bleed, no nerves to feel the pain.
I got up slowly unaware of what was going on. As I pushed myself up with my hands I felt, well... nothing. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. Had my entire body gone numb? No, I realize now that has a feeling of it’s own. This was entirely different, this wasn’t a feeling at all, it was the complete lack of. Was it this new world that I am in that had no texture or was it my body that was incapable of feeling. Where was this new place? Or was I at the exact same place just without everything around me? I didn’t get up off the ground so there was no way I could have moved places. I had to be just where I was before.
When I got to my feet I started to study my surroundings. No matter which way I looked I saw nothing but an endless void of grey. I was almost sure there was nothing out there but I continued to search, the only problem was that I couldn’t tell where I had already looked as when I turned around there was the same nothingness that I just turned away from. I faced one direction and decided to start walking. There was no use in standing in one place anyways. I lifted up my feet one by one and stepped slowly forwards. I couldn’t tell whether or not I had moved, the place I had stepped from was identical to the one I stepped to. How was I to know if I was going anywhere at all? I suppose it doesn't really matter though. I continued to walk slowly forward and observe my surroundings. Was this what death was like?
