"The thing to fear was the thing that made her beautiful and not us" -Toni Morrison

I was running through the woods with my sister when it happened. Usually I beat her, but today she was faster than me. We liked to race from a big maple tree to a bigger oak tree. We used to race everyday since we were 7, until that day. It happen when we were 16. When we race we agree to start at the maple tree and run to the oak tree, whoever gets there first waits for the other one. That day, she got there first, so I expected her to wait for me but when I got there she wasn’t. “Maybe I beat her” I thought. “But she ran ahead of me, I saw her, maybe she’s trying to scare me.”
“Carly?” I said. “Ha ha, very funny. If you’re trying to scare me it’s not working… come on Carly, this isn’t funny anymore, I’m cold, mom’s probably wondering where we are. She still doesn’t know about us racing, remember!” “Oh geez, she’s always trying to scare me, just because I’m the younger twin she thinks she has a right to torment me.”
“Carly!?” I yelled. “I swear to god, when I find her I’m gonna kill her.”
“Go home Zara.” I heard from behind me. It was definitely her, I recognised her voice.
“Carly? Is that you.” I asked. I slowly circled the oak tree until I was back where I was before, then looked around. “Come on Carly this isn’t funny, get out here so we can go home.” I said
“Um… I can’t come with you, you have to go back alone.” She whispered. Now it sounded like she was in front of me. I then saw a figure running towards me. Not sure what to do, I froze. Then I realized it was Carly.
“Carly! Thank god, What was that!? Were you trying to scare me? It wasn’t funny, you went too far this time.” I shouted at her.
“Zara! You need to leave, you need to leave now. Go home, get mom and dad and leave. I can’t come, I have to stall him, I got away for now, but I have to let him find me again so that you guys can leave.” she said
“What are you talking about, who’s ‘he’” I got cut off by him.
“Little girl” He slurred. “I’m gonna find you, and your whiny sister too.” He mocked.
“That’s him, I have to go. You need to hide. He can’t find you.”
“Carly! Who is he, how does he know who we are, what does he want to do, what are you going to do. What did we do to him?” I blurted.
“Shhh, he’ll hear you.” She whispered. Then she pulled me to the other side of the oak tree and pushed me into to bushes behind it. I heard the man stop walking, and made eye contact with Carly, we were both scared.
“I heard you, little girl. You can’t hide from me, I can see everything.” He sneered. “That’s how I know where you are, and your nasty sister.” Carly closed her eyes. And i closed mine too. I heard her scream, and the man drag her away. I didn’t open my eyes until I couldn’t hear him yelling at her or her screaming anymore. And even when I couldn’t I still crouched there, in the bushes, with my eyes closed. When I did get up I heard her words in my head “You need to leave, you need to leave now. Go home, get mom and dad and leave.”
“Carly?” I whispered.
“No” I heard faintly. I turned and looked up, and there was the man with Carly.
“I told her I’d find you.” He said with a grin.
I just remember waking up in a dark room with the worst headache I’ve ever had. I flinched when I touched the bloody gash on the top of my head. Must have been were he hit me to knock me out last night. Actually I had no idea what time it was, or where I was, or if I was even alive anymore.
