Rain Down Russ
Upon doing the dishes, I’ve created a theory of de-evolution. The theory of de-evolution is that in order for a species to evolve, there must be a mass regression in instinct, adaptability, and survival. Like a spring or an arrow, the process of pulling it back, sends it forward. This theory can be applied to many aspects of life, but take the average human being for example.
Many have described life as a roller coaster. Full of ups and down. But these ups and downs may just be the most important part of the process. The downs are like a never ending drop into a deep dark abyss. With every two inches you climb out, you fall one inch back in. But every time you attempt to reach, and with every inch you climb, you’re that much closer to the top. Some people’s holes are miles long, while others are just a few feet. Sometimes we fall down 10 inches. Sometimes we fall all the way back down to the bottom.
But when you’re rock bottom, and you’re at your lowest point, the only thing you can do is look up. You might not choose to look up immediately. You may decide to sit and rest in this place for awhile. But you can’t stay there forever and the only way you can go is up.
So you try again. This time you know what works and what doesn’t. You know your limits and have a better understanding of what you’re capable of. You know that you are weak and i might add a little pitiful. But you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired. You’ve lost everything, so you know there’s nothing to lose except your life. And you’ll lose that if you stay here anyway.
So you climb and you climb and you make it way further than the last time. Suddenly it starts to rain. In fact, it’s a hurricane. This hurricane is ferocious . Something you had absolutely no control over. It’s raining on you, clouding your vision, making your grip slippery so you have to stop climbing for awhile. But this delay lasts way longer than you had expected, in fact it appears to be never ending. So with your limited perspective you tell yourself that you’re not strong enough to hang on any longer. Why should you when the storm is never going to end anyway?
And you allow yourself to let go. And this time you decide to get comfortable with the rain, oblivious that the rain made you unaware that you were only two inches away. In time all storms must pass, because inevitably the only thing that is constant is change. As your eyes become clearer, you realize that the rain was not there to comfort you, but to cloud your view. But rain also helps thing grow. And after every storm there are two rainbows. Whether you can see them or not doesn’t matter.
So you take a beet breath because you can feel your breakthrough. Its been raining awhile, so you’ve gotten plenty of rest. You’ve almost made it once, so the only thing standing in your way is your will and determination. No excuses. No more waiting. No more talking yourself out of it.You got this. The long falls and all the stormy nights, all that sitting in the darkness has prepared you for this moment. You’re ready now. This time you go and you refuse to stop until you’ve made it out of that dreaded hole. You got this.
You reach a fourth of the way and you start to slip. But you don’t go far because this time you know how to catch yourself. Now you’re on fire, no longer going two inches at a time. Now you’re going four. It may not seem like a big difference but soon you’ll be doing six, then eight, then ten. You’re more than half way there and you feel like you’ve just barely gotten started.
Very soon you will be at the top. This time you can see it. It's almost within reach, just a little bit more. But then it starts to rain again. This storm even worse than the last. Oh but this time, this time you don’t stop. With all the strength you have left in your body, you pull yourself up.
You did it! You’ve made it out! And it’s still raining. The only difference is that you’ve been trapped in the dark for so long, you can’t help to appreciate the light. Even if the only light is when the lightning strikes, you can learn to dance to the drums of the thunders boom.
My friends, the symphony of the storm was meant for you to sing along with. So jump in the puddles and dance in the rain. Because after all, rain helps thing grow, and after every storm there are two rainbows. Let on be the refraction of light, and let the other be a refraction of you.
