Summary:
Christopher Berry, an optimistic young adult, goes to his town's annual fair on his own for the first time. He spots a new, beautiful woman, Magdeleine, on the ferris wheel and promises himself that he will meet her. Christopher wanders through the fair to find her, and when he does, everyone is staring at her. She is polite, but keeps to herself, and tries to keep parts of her body hidden. Christopher seems to have won her over when she agrees to spend the rest of the day with him, and when the day is over, she hesitates to meet again. Christopher grabs her hands and realizes why shes been hiding; her forearms are covered with small wounds. He disregards this, and she agrees to meet with him.
