El Silencio: An Ekphrasis of El Jaleo by John Singer Sargent

The heat of huddled bodies
levitates above the desert’s frozen soil.
Thick, heavy, it rests upon her chest
as she wades through it like a
wet bog of silt.
The smell of liquor rises to the peak of the ceiling
and ecos off her lips.
She is blinded,
but prefers it that way,
as she glides and spins
alone.
Her low lit shadow
projects beyond the limelight; yet,
dances from lap to lap.
Though so vibrant against the dull,
her shadow is muffled. It is kept drowned.
Just as the laughter,
just as the music.
