"Give in to love, or live in fear."

One day at school,
a new girl came.
My teacher said "hush",
so she could say her name,

"I'm Abby" she said,
as she sat herself down.
I found out later,
that she came from out of town,

As I watched her,
I decided maybe she was shy,
it looked as though she had a secret,
but I couldn't understand why.

So I walked over to her,
and said, "Hi, how are you?".
I tried my best to be friendly,
and I think she did too.

At the end of the day,
we ended up going home together,
we skipped the whole way,
through the burning hot weather.

When we got to Abby's house,
her parents were there.
I noticed some bruises on Abby,
her parents saw,
but didn't seem to care.

The next day at school,
I asked her where she got the scars,
all she said was,
"I ran into monkey bars."

I hardly believed,
that her story was true.
When her parents saw the bruises,
it was like they were nothing new.

Everyday at school,
there were more and more,
but Abby just said it was an accident,
she ran into a door.

I decided I'd just ignore it,
I blew it off,
I thought it would just go away!
Like a cold, or a cough.

One day we were going to go to each other's house,
and spend the night,
but when we got to Abby's house,
her parents started to fight.

Neither of us wanted to be there,
so I decided we'd go to my house instead,
well, right up until...
Abby's parents hit her across the head.

The next day at school...
Abby didn't show,
I asked if she was just late,
but everyone said no.

The lump in my throat grew bigger,
as I scanned the room to see,
if what they all said,
was really Abby's fate to be.

I realized it was true,
she wasn't coming back,
I knew it would take forever,
for me to face that fact.

I studied all of their faces,
everyone was crying,
I wanted to jump up and scream!
I felt like dying.

But the following day,
I found a note and shed a tear.
For at that very moment,
everything was coming clear.

I read the letter,
and the tears stung my eyes.
I came to remember,
we never said our good-byes.

"I lied Hayley,
it was really my dad.
He didn't mean it,
he was just really mad.

Please try to understand,
that my love is true,
I just don't think that there's anything,
that can help, that I can do.

So I say good bye now,
the tears fill my eyes,
I'm sorry all I ever told you,
were always just lies."

I could have helped you Abby.
Why couldn't you just try?
You could have mentioned just once,
and you might not have had to die.

This is my favorite poem of all. I wrote it years ago but it represents a huge problem in society. I hope it helps people realize exactly how big of a problem child abuse is.
