Sky Drums
It starts with a twist in the atmosphere,
A heaviness that hangs in the air.
It's been long since anyone noticed up high
The symphony about to begin there.
A still hush leaks into the lazy spring heat
While the breezy sky dusts into gray.
Windows are shut, flower buds stretch their stems
As crystal-clear drops pierce the day.
They plow to the ground and slide down the grass,
Each one a shining gem spark.
Then with a gust the neighborhood stills
As the storm snaps the houses to dark.
The roads swell to rivers that swallow the earth;
Such a violent and beautiful sight.
Clouds shake the soil with their primal growl.
The dull sky splits open with white.
Outside the window the trees are awake,
Strewn from the wind's push and shove.
Their leaves and branches come out to parade,
Dancing to the sky drums above.
