In the Mountains, There You Feel Free
Here at the edge of the earth,
the soul takes flight
And the mind drowns in poetic metaphors.
Something in nature
Takes over man,
And it is neither brutal nor beastly.
Rather, that which takes over man
As he watches the sun set
Over an ocean
Fills him with the terrible knowledge
Of freedom.
He knows then
No societal mores
Nor expectations –
Only existence
And the joys or sorrows thereof.
The freedom granted him
By nature
Is a freedom higher
Than that granted him by law,
For this freedom
Is freedom from that very law,
Freedom to simply be.
The freedom we thought we gave ourselves
In that precious law.
