Childhood Dreams

His velvety coat
Has grown dusty and stale
The white on his face
Has turned gray
The beans in my pup
Through the years, without fail
Deflated him once
Rolled away

I long ago freed
His ears stitched to his head
When I one day thought
He looked sad
Then many years past
I took needle and thread
To patch up his paw
Just a tad

He smells a bit odd
Like a mothball or grime
I don't know what those
Stains could be
For several years now
Many years past his prime
He's perched on my shelf
Watching me

I'm now seventeen
Not quite legally grown
Yet have countless things
On my mind
To college I'll go
Off to live on my own
And of course, that pup
Stays behind

A bit of guilt comes
When his eye catches mine
I recognize that
Friendly gleam
For I'll always know
There's a place deep inside
Where Spot protects my
Childhood dreams

The author's comments:
One night while worrying about college and sifting through my old 'Preschool Memories' box, I noticed my old puppy beanie baby on top of the books on my shelf... I think I'm most inspired after midnight. Any other time I doubt I'd feel moved to drop everything and write a poem...

This was so cute, and somehow it's very relatable.....

To love is to be vulnerable; Triumph is born out of struggle; We notice shadows most when they stand alone in the midst of overwhelming light.

Aw, I love this. I'm so ahppy that you wrote about this; in a way I can rather connect. :) All in all, this is just beautiful and phenomenal and wonderful to me, with a small tinge of sadness because you're growing up and moving on, but that's awesome and wonderful. :) Good luck, by the way. :) I enjoyed this,a lot. Thank you so much, for sharing this. You really have such a talent and light in you; never forget that. Haha, you probably won't, since I'll keep reminding you. ;) :) Believe that, because you are powerful and wonderful. Thank you again. :)

This poem is so cute! It's a little melancholy, but it's also comforting, since we all know there's a part of us that won't quite ever grow up. :) Great job!
