A billion bright lanterns
They are the only ones lighting the sky. I am the only one who didn’t say goodbye. A billion bright lanterns with sharp edges and white skin like mine. A billion up in the sky all night long. A billion rays lighting his way. From the ground, I can see them, but it’s almost dawn and my mom says he’s gone.
Their mission was clear. They lit the way so his spirit could fly. They fly up and fly down the wind’s breath spins them round and round until they don’t feel too sound. This is how they were built.
Let one never forget this ones name, they burn out one by one just like the life they represent. Almost forgetting his memory when I sleep. Never forget.
When I am too sad and cannot go on I keep the memories close, tiny things clinging to my mind, lanterns still burning. When there is nothing left but fleeting thoughts. A billion ways I feel the pain. A billion times I reach and do not forget to hold fast. A billion reasons that I can continue to be.
