Lines of Communication
Mail me your lips in an envelope
And paste a flowery stamp on the front
with the taste of sweetner.
Send it kicking and screaming.
I’ll slice it open with my love, giving you advice,
the words “come home” slip my tongue.
I was the one you always dreamed of,
You were the one I tried to draw.
My voicemail is stuffed with your tone,
Feeling like a fool with no control, you’re gone.
I worship the essence of your scent.
Only wanting more, I adore and grab my sketchpad
And wait for my pencil to translate
the crinkles by your eyes.
Your voice is the sound of birds
but my drawing is broken glass.
I was the one you always dreamed of,
You were the one I tried to draw.
You came to me with the thought of him
glistening in your eyes.
Unfolding my sketch,
My hands bleed at the thought of someone else running in your dreamland.
I was the one you always dreamed of. You were mine.
You are the one I try to draw.

My poem "Lines of Communication" expresses the unforgiving pain of longing for someone who has moved on to a new love. This is inspired by my favorite song by John Mayer "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room".
