“Be kind” is what they said

They think it makes a difference

“Be nice” is what they spread

They think it of magnificence

Adults are good

That’s what we’ve been taught

Help us, they could

At least, that’s what I thought

But what happens when

The adults don’t care?

What happens when

The adults aren’t there?

Even worse are those times

The adults can see

Yet they turn a blind eye

And pretend it can’t be

They wish that they knew

Just how bad it is

Yet only a few

Realize we’re kids

They said that they cared

They said they’d be there

They said they’d be fair

They said don’t despair

The cards have been dealt

And I can’t seem to shake

The sadness I felt

And that feeling of hate

When we needed them most

The adults had failed

Now, none but a ghost

Of that trust has prevailed

This piece is dedicated to the classmates I lost to suicide. The classmates that could've--should've--been saved. If only the adults in our lives had cared enough to try. I love you all, and I hope you're better now, wherever you may be.
