Monster
Once upon a time there lived a monster in this town
It hid itself quite well under every sweater and every gown
It embedded itself within the heart of the entire town’s folk so weak
It made sure to overtake the victim until the root of evil was at its peak
I was a mere acquaintance of this monster, while for some they called it home
I never did quite understand the feeling of being—most together and some alone
As we grow like beanstalks, seeking nurture from fairytales of our youth
We forget the most important thing, the day the beanstalk gathered root
We parade diligently through the streets in which we travel
We seek meaning from the things in life that leave us in baffle
Why don’t we understand that the monster who takes inhabitance within us all
Is nothing more than a reminder, to ride life’s attractions you must be this tall
The most important thing is to stop and make sure what we feel is right
If it’s our soul, our mind, or our body then which do we let take flight?
Malevolent, meticulous, marauding monster of those who dare dream
Why won’t you let our ambitions take wind and let us soar on turbulent wings?
I find it scary that in ten years, ten thousand trials will fill my ten million breaths
I find the scariest thing in life is the monster that hides not in my closet, but in my chest
For most of us fill our closet with skeletons, memories that escaped the moment too soon
I fill my closest with recollections of life since I expedited and explored outside the womb
That resilient parasite, the monster that ceases to leave me alone
Is the sole fear of growing up and not knowing where I am to roam
Mislead and underfed from nurtures of our youth
We forget the monster pries itself upon the beanstalks root
It is there from the day of our being—all together and none alone
We have left each other believing that this monster is our home
So once upon a time a moon hung low and a dense fog covered the land
Some of us were left grieving while others took life and ran away in hand
Those who left life happy and left an account of their happiness in stone
Were those who battled with the monsters but left the abyss alone

Poem inspired by Nietzches quote in which I adore so much, "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."

Kind of yes, more so describing the monster that lives within us all, the inner fear of growing up. That trascending fear into the unknown and having to leave most of your earlier years behind you.

"You love someone, you open yourself up to suffering, that's the sad truth. Maybe they'll break your heart, maybe you'll break their heart and never be able to look at yourself in the same way. Those are the risks. The thought of losing so much control over personal happiness is unbearable. That's the burden. Like wings, they have weight, we feel that weight on our backs, but they are a burden that lifts us. Burdens which allow us to fly..."
-Dr. Jack Hodgins (Bones)

To me, It kind of sounds like you're describing the human soul
