Second Chances
Best friends, Co-workers, inseparable since kindergarten,
We were both too young and anxious to remember all of the elementary alcohol lessons.
We did just about everything together.
I thought about what we could have done different on that last day with each other.
Who do you run to when you’ve done wrong and you’re alone?
And what must I say to the family waiting for their loved one to return home?
As High school grads, we just wanted to have fun
Not once thinking of the consequences of our actions
Unaware that this would be her last breath after the falling of the sun,
Living for that day and not our future’s satisfaction.
At a party when you’re underage, the most dangerous decisions are the most tempting
A shot or two wouldn’t put us in harm’s way right?
After being offered more, this peculiar feeling had become almost addicting
Behind the wheel, a body fully immune to those shots took Laura’s life that night.
Who do you run to when you’ve done wrong and you’re alone?
And what must I say to the family waiting for their loved one to return home?
The car swerved straight off of the interstate and into a tree.
When I awoke, I didn’t know if this was real at all,
Touching Laura’s shoulder, receiving no response; I knew she was dead sitting next to me.
I sat there in fear before I gave the ambulance a call.
Walking among the living every day with guilt in my heart
Sentenced to four years for DUI manslaughter
Similar to day and night, yet having so much in common I never pictured us apart.
These were the words from her mom: We still love you, but you killed my only daughter.
So who do you run to when you’ve done wrong and you’re alone?
And what must I tell the family waiting for their loved one at home?
