I Fell Asleep in the Shadows, Dancing
I fell asleep in the shadows, dancing
As the night turned into day
A flower blooming in the crevice
Of a lonely alleyway
I breathed the dampened silence
Wet and heavy like thick clay,
The dark and moldy scent of absence,
Of love’s slow rotting decay
Of a dripping, cobwebbed basement
Called home by bugs and memories
In a sorry old house which none will rent,
To which no one has the key
Breathing rapidly, I was
Inhaling Shallowly, because
My mouth hung open as if crying,
It was reaching for a kiss,
But only a soft mist was there
To rest upon my lips
The condensation of a dying breath
Wilting flower in the alleyway
Petals dropped til’ none were left
The breath lifted quietly away
And so I fell asleep at last
As the moon bowed to honor the sun,
Dancing in the shadows, I passed
For an audience of none.
