Small Victories

small victories
are important
in the depths of this cloudy rain filled winter
my hair is brushed today
and my socks are matching
i sharpened my pencil on the first try
and my toast is perfectly browned
it's not that i'm an optimist
because i don't think i am
it's that i have learned to smother my mistakes
in cups of coffee perfectly topped with cream
my small victories are my blanket
they cover me
and are my only hope
for surving this winter
