The phoniex
The people scream
Stop smoking
Stop drugs
Just stop
And I gaze at them
with glazed eyes
As the burning phoenix
Lit outside my chapped lips
Burns to nothing
And comes back to life
Inside my lungs
And I know
I should quit
Ads of terror
Streaming into my dreams
As I burn from the inside out
Flames licking at my throat
Until nothing’s left but ashes
And the phoenix is reborn
It’s not as easy as it seems
To quit
As I wait
One hour
Two
Three
And the chains pull
As the phoenix struggles
Begging for the flames that bind me
Burning me with a different mark
Pulling me down
Gasping for a breath
And I give in
And the phoenix lives on

Just had this thought because whenever I look at articles about addiction, it’s portrayed as it being easy to quit, and that the addicte just doesn’t want to. With both parents addicted to smoking, I can say from experience it’s the opposite.
