An Ode to my Grey Eyes

My eyes are grey

My eyes are as grey as the creak

Under the door at night.

Like the early morning sun

Peeking through my black out blinds.

My eyes are the lens

My mind is the memory card.

My pain, trauma, and regrets, all caught with the click of a button.

My happiness, adventures, and accomplishments all saved on a hard drive.

My eyes are grey.

I cry grey tears.

I look at my loved ones in black and white

My eyes are grey

As grey as the skidmark down the driveway.

Like the feathers

Of a nuthatch.

But Im starting to see the world in colors.

True colors.

Green, like the drugs my neighbor is selling to teenagers.

Blue, like hospital beds.

Orange, like prison uniforms.

Purple, like the eye my brother came home with last week.

Pink, like the house around the corner where the lonely woman lives.

Red, like the blood dripping down my wrists.
