Sleepy Goodbyes

I am tired but I cannot sleep.
I cannot close my eyes.
When I open them I don't know what will be there
or better yet who won't be.
Things were fixed for a while;
I was less afraid
but you never know when someone will leave you
and if you are going to go
I would rather watch you leave
with my eyes wide open
then have you say goodbye to me while I sleep.

Last September I woke up to the news that my dad had passed away while I was sleeping. Ever since then I am rarely able to sleep at night because it lingers in my mind that I was not there for him in the end.
