Yellow

Before I was wreckage

Too broken for fixing

I was overtaken by emotions

A storm of nervousness

When reaching for the door

To talk was no more than war

Sadness was classified

The storms would stay

But everyone would leave

Runaway

To solitude

But never return

For it must be too dangerous

To smile my way

But when I was almost gone

I found an escape

A journey to other dimensions

To be able to create my own worlds

In the words that I speak

To find my voice but with a pen in my hand

I was able to demand

Joyus to the world

But most importantly to oneself

I would soon be whole again

The author's comments:

This piece is about my mental illness, in the beginning of this poem I sat in my room staring at a blank piece of paper just praying something would come to me. Nothing did, but as I looked back in my pile of journals for inspiration, I realized something that I potentially have never realized before, and that was that writing really saved my life. As an escape, this is my way of expressing how mental illness has changed my life not only in horrible ways but how it also brought such joy to my life, as well.
