What I Could Never Be
I shivered, you shook
I look to you and your eyes entreat
My breath wasn’t hot anymore
I ran for your aid
Like a roadrunner sprinting across the finish line
You stayed
Sleeping like the tortuous at the start of the book
Instead, however, you would never cross that finish line
At least, definitely not first
I wept, alerting those of your state
Wishing I were the one that late
I stood on my legs remembering
Every ounce of you
Before I forgot again
Because I am a dog who shouldn’t feel
And you were the human who didn’t heal
