On the sidewalk

My snow white shoelace

Flips and flops

Untying a knot

Like a million dreams on Saturn

Or the fears at night in the swimming pool

Or the ink that dripped like blood from a pen that wouldn’t write

Flip flop

The shoelace comes undone

Like a million dreams crushed with the rising sun

And the fears going down the drain and me drowning with chlorine in my throat

And the pen that dipped its nib in my blood and began to write

Flip flop

The shoe lace is caked with mud

Like my dreams taking a shower in a concrete tub

Or my fears drinking cherry juice from a transparent cup

The pen being dropped in a bottomless puddle, the size of the Ocean

Flip flop

My shoelace is cut in half

My dreams explode in a dozen shards

Like fireworks in the sky, like glass on the ice

My fears circuit on the wire, shortening down the even rope

The pen bobs on the water

Bleeding the blood of words everywhere.

The author's comments:

This piece started taking shape in my head after I was walking home from school one day and I was wearing my brand new white sneakers, and I noticed how nice and white the shoelaces were. After a few months, I was walking home and my shoelace came undone but I was too lazy to tie it, so I watched it flip flop on the sidewalk and it got really dirty by the time I came home.
