My soul tastes like smoke, and smells of rain.
I find I think too often
About so many things
The past
The future
I try in my feeble way to describe the indescribable
But I am simple
And I am tired
My soul tastes like smoke
And smells of rain
I am human
And I am so tired.

I have synesthesia and I was talking to a friend about the tastes and smells I associate with different people, and they asked what I thought of myself. I told them that my soul tasted like campfire smoke, and smelled like morning rain. And that is how this poem came to be. About the meaning? I find this piece to represent how I may have so many things to do, topics to discuss. Words to put on a page and feelings to pour into work. But I will always be human. I get tired. I always found smoke and rain to be sad smells and flavors, ones representing sorrow and exhaustion but with hope. After a forest is burned, new plants sprout. When a field is flooded, plants and life will return. I am tired, I am human. But I still have hope.
