Death crept toward me with a frown

Of wistful, longing camaraderie.
My heel hooked a step and he bent down,

To swaddle me in his own black charm.
I scrambled myself up—denied his arm.

Death’s eyes were swarming pits,

Infested with the Plague.
What practice had he in his midst

To keep himself so calmly unfeeling?
To keep my nerves unbounded and reeling?

Death came to me in such a way,

I was convinced of Paradise’ splendor.
But he led me from the late morning,

To a shadow my building did render.
Oh, Death fooled me to my poised surrender.
