I remember that day
The way one remembers a Christmas
Seven years ago.
My sister and I, tanned and freckled
Like we always were in those heavy summers,
Held each others’ hands
On the cool floor of our empty room
And sang each other simple songs--
Two verses, three at most.
But those songs were what we had,
Those songs, big brown boxes, and memories.
“You’ll love it,” our parents swore.
We weren’t convinced.
But we went anyway.
Two tiny, curly headed sisters
With a song, a box, and a new life.
