When I took a bite of lemon
and held it on my tongue,
when it tasted like nothing,
when I couldn't feel the acid
eroding my teeth,
when I couldn't feel the citrus
damage my taste buds,
I knew that
I was done caring.

When I put my iPod on shuffle
and put both earbuds in,
when I kept going to
the next song,
when the lyrics were all mixed up
in my head,
when I could only hear the words
and none of the music,
I knew that
I was done trying.

When I held up the binoculars
in front of my eyes,
when my view was all blurry,
when everything went by slower,
when everything was moved
further away,
I knew that
I was done paying attention.

When I saw that
your smile only held up
since there were
no gaps between your teeth to
let the truth tumble out,
when I saw that
your eyes only looked
such a pretty blue
when you were faking it,
when I knew what was going on,
but your words were
something different,
when
you hid everything,
I knew that
I wanted to help you,
But I just
couldn't help myself.
