The Sun

Mouth is dry and skin is cracked,
I pray for rain and stand alone.
Falter to my knees, sun hits my back,
I notice it’s intensity has grown.

Skin turns from white to tan,
Than to a blistering red.
Bleeding the skin peels to where it began,
Is it real or in my head.

Bereft of sound my ears grow numb
And sore eyes, they seal close.
Laying here I wait for the rain to come,
This isn’t what I chose.

But clouds have vacated my sky,
As hope abandons my head.
Grinding teeth I begin to cry
When I remember what you said.

“You did this to yourself!” She cried,
“You let me fall away..”
I just stood there, couldn’t find,
The right words to say.

She clenched her fists, she was sure,
Biting her lip she turned her back.
Touching her shoulder, “I never wanted this..”
Getting her things, she began to pack.

One last kiss and a last breath lost,
One more beat of my heart with hers.
I gave it all away, but at what cost,
Just one more beat of my heart with hers.

Mouth is dry and skin is cracked,
I pray for rain and stand alone.
Wiping the tears, I know what I lack
My need for you has grown.

Don’t fall away and leave me to the sun
Don’t leave me to realize just what I’ve done.
