Strangers
A man sits alone in a park
He sits upon a bench covered in the mist
He hears the feet of an approaching stranger
He feels the cool dampness of the night
He waits for the stranger
A woman jogs alone in a park
She jogs through the mist
She hears the calm of the silent night
She feels her lungs ready to burst
She stops beside the stranger
They look upon each other
They see each other surrounded by mist
They hear the shallow breath of one another
They feel the dampness of the morning dew
The begin to talk to each other, as strangers often do
The man asks the woman “What is it that your fear?”
The woman replies:
I fear the mist directing me to nowhere
I fear the sight of the devil’s face
I fear the cry of my children
I fear the feeling of despair
I fear strangers meaning harm
The woman asks the man “What is it that your fear?”
The man replies:
I fear the mist taking over the daylight
I fear the sight of an injured soldier
I fear the sound of a wounded animal
I fear the feeling of death
I fear strangers meaning harm
They look through the mist at one another
They smile
They stand
They walk in opposite directions
They look back at one another, just to be sure.
