Stray children like stray dogs:
unkempt, unwanted, unloved,
brown eyes pleading for attention,
brown arms reaching for a hug,
so many children
so desperate for love.
It takes so little
to chase the sadness from their eyes:
broken phrases of affection
spoken in broken Spanish but fluent love
prompt giggles from frowning mouths,
laughter washing the tear-stains from their cheeks.
Simple games become wonders,
simple gestures weighted
with the love so desired.
Happy children,
no longer like stray dogs,
secure in arms of love.
