Coastal Maine
The air wrapped her sultry arms
Around us, fingers caressing our flushed cheeks
And breath filling our sails and our hearts
That summer.
The sea fought the rocks
And his salty lips curled
In carefree summer laughter,
Provoking every grain of sand
In the way of the water
To roll with him in celebration
Of another cloudless day.
Electric pulse ran down my spine
Every time that our pinkies brushed.
We shuffled through the
Crowded county fair,
Wide-eyed and slack-jawed
At the splendor.
The vendors call out to us
And the scent of cotton candy wafts
Right beneath our noses as we
Hear fellow fair-goers shriek with delight.
The line for the Ferris wheel snakes around
Metal barricades and down the Center of Main Street.
Looking out over the ocean, the noises
From below fade away, and only the
Thump of my heartbeat remains.
Tiny tea lights dot our sky bound cart,
Mirroring the constellations in the
Clear summer night.
He interlaced his fingers between mine
And with his free hand,
Tucked a loose strand of gold behind my ear.
With his palm still cupping my jawbone
He murmured sweet words for only me to hear.
With emotions strong enough to carry any tune,
He sung me the song of July. I call it,
Romance in the summertime.
