The Berries
The berries shine with wholesome luster
From the granite kitchen countertop.
Red strawberries spotted with slight seeds,
Blueberries of soft, symmetrical roundness,
Blackberries- little clusters of purple.
They sit and stare and smile at me,
From the smooth granite kitchen countertop,
From the bamboo-wood cutting board.
The fact that they’ll be sweet
With a sugary tenderness, goes without saying.
They sit and stare and smile at me,
As I contemplate their existence;
Shining little thoughtful fruits,
Grown to the peak of their prime,
Watching from the bamboo-wood cutting board,
Admiring the gleam of my blade.
Nurtured to loving perfection
They know only warmth and care;
Unassuming creatures of naiveté.
Though still as sweet as candy.
The berries sparkle with tempting luster
From the granite kitchen countertop.
Red strawberries, blueberries, and black,
“Hold still!” As I bring the knife down.
