"You can't get more real than Heaven and Hell"- My dad

Remember that starry fall night?
The stars glistened in the promise of the evening.
It was getting late in the hour and the season.
You got close to me and shared your warmth.
And the blood flowed to my cheeks
Returning the color the night had stolen.
At least that’s what I thought would happen.

Instead I whined about the temperature
And you stayed in your place.
You playfully called me a wimp
And told me to zip up my jacket.
And that’s what happened.

Remember when the others weren’t near us?
We were the only things in the universe;
Us and the stars.
We gazed into each other’s eyes;
The blues and greens mixing and getting lost in each other
Creating a world only for us to inhabit.
At least that’s how I’d like to remember it.

Instead I looked into yours eyes
Wanting to get lost and create.
And you, starting to feel the connection,
Diverted your attention to the others.
You ignored me.
And that’s what happened

Remember the night we fell in love?
The stars glistening,
Your arms around me, and the scent of you invading my nostrils.
Our eyes creating that world.
Our lips delightedly greeting each other for the first time,
And that barrier of friendship finally breaking.
Yeah I don’t remember that either.

Instead, I was embarrassed from being ignored.
I silently shivered under those stars.
And the barrier seemed stronger.
We left shortly after that.
I walked home and you went to your car.
And as the distance grew I remembered the reason for the barrier;
I was your friend but she was your girlfriend.
And the stars couldn’t change that.

Sometimes reality can seem so different from our expectations that we would rather just reject reality and live in our delusions.

I love the little side comment you have about rejecting reality. It reminds me of  calvin and hobbs cartoon I saw once.

Yeah, that part sucked for a while but it got better eventually. I'm really just glad to be his friend.

Thanks. But don't be. I'm the one that's impressed. That paragraph about creating your own world was so cute and clever.

I feel so bad for you though. Him having a girlfriend and all.

Yeah, you are actually. I didn't think anyone would get that because I was so vague. I'm impressed.

I love your last line! "And the stars couldn't change that." I think that's a reference to older literature and how they thought the stars had something to do with destiny. Like Romeo and Juliet being "star-crossed lovers". Am I right?
