The Dark Thing
There is a dark thing
 in the muck.
 It is slimy smooth,
 and black, like a
 new leather sofa.
 It creeps through
 the thick ooze,
 sloppy and cool.
It does not need to breathe.
 Breath, is not necessary
 for this creature,
 this dark thing.
 Yet it does breathe,
 its huge sticky lungs
 wheezing and billowing
 as they exhale
 great amounts of
 breath, which
 ripple,
 deep
 in the mud.
 The dark thing
 is resting.
 It has slept,
 a thick, moving
 sleep, for a long time.
 But now, the
 dark thing has woken.
