i
am melancholy
thinking of a life that is
not mine but that is alien.
I cannot remember what it
feels like to be simple
unhindered
clean
and free
I forget
and I cannot remember
yet that life is me
and it is
gone beyond recollection. Come back
to me, little one.
I want to play with
you again
and cry and smile
and be free

it is funny
we only appreciate it,
that sweetest of things,
when it's gone,
and we would scream
and cry to have it
back- after such
a length,
and be simple again.

The author's comments:
I was looking at a picture of myself when I was about two years old, and was struck suddenly by a sad longing to remember that moment, and was quickly swept up into a mood of deep melancholia that I could not and almost began to cry, which I was shocked at all the more. I also wrote the first stanza with my eyes closed, and copied it here as such it was on paper.
