As you look throughout the city
And see the destruction about
Does our country care? I truly start to doubt
It’s already been six years
But the effects will last forever
I walk past a homeless family
And I slowly start to tremor
A date that changed the country forever
August 28 2005
We still remember those who lost their lives
Families were split apart
Best friends broken up
Come on, America, I thought you had a heart
Vacant buildings and overgrown weeds are a common sight
But that just isn’t right
Grass taller than most children
And no place to play in
This once was a place of hope
But as soon as that levee broke
It turned to a place of horror
People shipped all over the country
Some never coming back
And, us, the rest of country, picked up for what they lacked.
And now six years later
They’re better off than before
But some may have forgoten they still need so much more
The trash still on the streets
The people not yet on their feet
Still need us as much as ever
As they’re still on this never ending Endeavour
To get their community back
All of the citizens on the right track
To bring New Orleans back together
It may be old news now
But trust me, the devastation was much greater
They still need help and prayers
Even six years later.
