My Mask (Masquerade)
When I wake up in the morning
And rise to face the day,
 I take a breath,
 Grab my mask,
 And brush the tears away.

My mask I wear from day to day,
To hide who I really am.
 To hide from scorn
 And ridicule;
 A weak and injured lamb.

I hope one day to leave the house
 Without this beautiful masquerade:
 To be free to be
 The person I am
 And drop this whole charade.

Deep down, in the bottom of my soul,
I know this can’t be true.
 Escaping my self-
 Inflicted pain
Is something I will never do.
