When You're Young
When you’re a little kid
you use big numbers because you think
the sky’s the limit
Once you’re older,
reality limits you
When you are young,
your nightmares involve the Bogeyman or the Grouch,
that secret, invisible monster lurking under your bed
but once you grow up,
you fear rape, violence, death
When you’re young, you toddle after your family,
happy to have someone to follow
when you get older, you follow and lead,
loving individuality and conformity
When you’re young,
you think nobody can stop you
when you’re older, somebody does
When you’re young,
you have what others tell you
but after you grow up,
you have your thoughts
and imagination
When you're young,
you think you're always right
As you get older,
you realize nobody is
and sometimes,
that's enough
