The Nature of Them
she looked at him
and he looked at her
neither of them
spoke a word
they needed to
but they didn’t have to
and so they didn’t.
thoughts raced
and pulses flew
each one thinking
I love you
the thought was mute
and yet it sang
for them it was everything.
mouths parted
lips drew breath
but no words were said.
that was their curse
neither could find the words
that would save them both
and so nothing came out.
a tear emerged
from one’s cheek
but it wasn’t truly one
because sometimes
it was hard to tell
where one stopped
and the other began.
this was the nature of them.
